Dear Friends,
I hope you are enjoying your summer. I write to let you know of some of the exciting events and changes that you will be seeing soon from the Philippine American Bar Association, as well as to let you know how your membership dues are spent. We encourage you, if you are not currently on active status, to pay your membership dues soon, so that you can participate in all the great events we have planned.
PABA’s Annual BBQ and Membership Meeting is coming up on August 5, 2017, in San Marino at the home of PABA Lifetime Member Darren Manibog. As usual, it will be a well-attended, well-catered event that will allow you to get to know your peers better, all while eating delicious Filipino food.
PABA is further proud to announce that it will be hosting the Pinay Powerhouse II Conference here in Los Angeles in partnership with the Filipino Bar Association of Northern California. PABA is excited to join FBANC in presenting this powerful event. The event is being planned for early 2018.
PABA’s popular Adobo Nights will return in September, this time on the west side, at the home of PABA Lifetime Member and Board Member Ernie Ocampo.
We at PABA strive to provide our members and the community with relevant and powerful content that helps to foster and promote the professional growth of our members and to serve the Fil-Am community. Most of the events we put on are low-cost and free for members, students, and members of community organizations. Our events include:
* Recent CLE on Immigration in the Trump Administration that was well-attended not only by attorneys, but also community leaders.
* Adobo Nights every other month to allow our members to get to know each other in a more laid-back, intimate setting.
* Co-sponsored events with organizations such as the Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Advancing Justice, and many others.
* Co-sponsoring the Joint APA Bar Association Summer Mixer with the Southern California Chinese Lawyers Association this coming Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at the Bonaventure Brewing Company from 6 – 8PM.
In addition to having a mentorship program and seminars targeted towards students, we provide scholarships to deserving students every year. At our gala this year, together with the PABA Foundation, we awarded four students with scholarships totaling $8,000. We hope to continue to grow the number of scholarships we provide, so that we can help more students achieve their goals.
All of this is not free. We try to obtain sponsors and raise funds during the gala, but our primary source of income is our membership dues. If you have not yet done so, please consider paying your dues. Please consider becoming a lifetime member. In addition to all these great benefits from PABA, your membership also provides you with access to additional benefits. For example, your PABA membership provides you with affiliate memberships with the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, the National Filipino American Lawyers Association, and the Multicultural Bar Alliance of Southern California, and all the benefits of those memberships. Your dues go a long way.
We know that some have commented on our membership period based on the calendar year as being rather awkward or inconvenient. Therefore, we have changed it. Your dues will now cover twelve months. From July 19, 2017, forward, all newly paid membership dues will cover you for twelve months from the date of payment. For anyone that paid prior to July 19, 2017, your membership will expire on December 31, 2017.
To become a member, please sign up on our website at https://pabala.org/membership/.
With your support, PABA will continue to grow and expand its reach and make a difference in our community.
We hope to see you at an event soon.
Maraming Salamat,
Philip Lim Nulud
President
